Tanzania: A Premier Birdwatching Destination in Africa
Tanzania is one of Africa’s top destinations for birdwatching, boasting an impressive species list. With over 1,100 recorded species, including more than 800 resident birds and nearly 200 migratory species, it’s a paradise for bird enthusiasts. The country is home to 22 endemic species, along with an additional 43 near-endemics. Migratory birds arrive from Europe and Northern Africa between November and April, making this an ideal time to visit.
Best Time for Birdwatching
While Tanzania offers good birding year-round, the peak season is from November to April, when migratory species add to the diversity. During this period, many resident birds are nesting and display vibrant breeding plumage. The wettest months, March and April, bring daily storms to parts of the country, and temperatures on the coast can be quite high. For general wildlife viewing, however, the dry season is typically better.

All of Tanzania’s well-known safari parks offer excellent birdwatching opportunities, with unique species found in every region. Arusha National Park, often overlooked, features a remarkable diversity of habitats and an impressive list of over 400 species in a compact area. Lake Manyara National Park, known for its waterbirds, also hosts a great variety of species, making it an excellent choice for bird enthusiasts.
