Mount Meru, often referred to as the “little sister” of Mount Kilimanjaro, stands at 4,566 meters compared to Kilimanjaro’s 5,895 meters. Despite its smaller stature, Mount Meru is an impressive freestanding volcano that offers an exhilarating four-day climb to the summit. The mountain last erupted in 1910, classifying it as an active volcano.
The first recorded ascent of Mount Meru was made by Dr. Fritz Jaeger in 1904. Located near the town of Arusha, the mountain is a popular trekking destination, with numerous tour companies offering guided climbs. Due to the presence of wildlife, trekkers are usually accompanied by an armed ranger for safety. Mount Meru provides a unique and breathtaking experience for those looking to explore Tanzania’s natural beauty.
