🌋 Mount Meru: Tanzania’s Hidden Gem
Mount Meru offers an exhilarating and highly rewarding ascent, perfect for adventure enthusiasts and nature lovers alike. The current crater of Mount Meru was formed approximately 250,000 years ago when a powerful sideways eruption blasted away its eastern volcanic cone. This dramatic event left the northern, southern, and western slopes intact, giving the crater its distinctive horseshoe shape when viewed from above. The western crater rim marks the mountain’s highest point, with towering cliffs that plunge an awe-inspiring 1,500 meters to the crater floor—making it one of the highest crater walls in Africa.
Standing as the fifth-highest mountain on the African continent and the second-highest in Tanzania, Mount Meru is an iconic destination. The challenging four-day trek to Socialist Peak, which rises to 4,566 meters, offers more than just a mountain-climbing experience—it’s also a walking safari. Along the Momela route, you’re likely to encounter wildlife such as giraffes, buffaloes, antelopes, and monkeys. For your safety, an armed park ranger accompanies you throughout the journey, ensuring both an adventurous and secure experience.
