📍 Day 2: Drive to Shira Gate & Trek to Shira 1 Camp

Elevation: 3,400m to 3,600m
Distance: 4 km
Duration: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Moorland

🔥 Tip: Walk at a slow pace (“Pole Pole”) to adjust to the altitude.
🛏 Overnight: Shira 1 Camp

After an early breakfast, your adventure officially begins with a scenic 3-hour drive from Arusha to the Londorossi Gate (2,250m), the western entrance to Kilimanjaro National Park. Here, you’ll complete registration formalities while enjoying the lush montane forest surroundings. If you’re lucky, you might spot Colobus monkeys leaping through the trees.

From Londorossi, the drive continues further up the mountain to Shira Gate (3,400m), where your trek officially begins. Unlike other Kilimanjaro routes that start at lower elevations, the Shira Route begins at a high altitude, meaning some trekkers may experience mild altitude symptoms early on. Your guides will monitor you closely and encourage a slow, steady pace (pole pole) to aid acclimatization.

The initial trek to Shira 1 Camp (3,600m) is relatively gentle, taking you across the expansive Shira Plateau, a high-altitude volcanic caldera formed by past eruptions. The terrain is a mix of open moorland, heather, and ancient lava flows, creating a rugged yet beautiful landscape. Kibo Peak, Kilimanjaro’s summit, rises majestically in the distance, a reminder of the challenge ahead.

As you progress, you’ll pass unique plant life, including giant lobelias and everlasting flowers, which thrive in this high-altitude environment. The crisp, cool air is refreshing, and the breathtaking views make the trek even more enjoyable.

By afternoon, you’ll reach Shira 1 Camp, set on a flat plateau with stunning views of Mount Meru behind you and Kibo Peak ahead. After settling in, you’ll enjoy a hot meal while your guides discuss the following day’s trek and provide tips for acclimatization. As night falls, temperatures drop significantly, and the starry sky over the plateau offers one of the clearest nightscapes on Kilimanjaro.

📍Day 3: Trek Across the Shira Plateau to Shira 2 Camp

Elevation: 3,600m to 3,850m
Distance: 7 km
Duration: 3–4 hours
Habitat: Moorland

🌿 Highlight: Panoramic views of Mount Meru at sunset
🛏 Overnight: Shira 2 Camp

This is one of the most scenic and rewarding days on the trek, as you traverse the Shira Plateau, a vast and ancient caldera that was formed by volcanic activity over 500,000 years ago. The plateau, now a high-altitude desert, is a striking contrast to the lush rainforest of the previous day.

As you trek, you’ll enjoy panoramic views of Mount Meru in the distance and the towering Kibo Peak, Kilimanjaro’s summit, ahead. The rolling landscape is dotted with giant lobelias and Senecio trees, which thrive in the high-altitude environment, giving the area an almost prehistoric feel.

The air becomes noticeably thinner as you ascend, but the gradual incline and steady trekking pace help with acclimatization. Along the way, you might see wildlife tracks, as Shira Plateau is home to eland, serval cats, and even occasional buffalo that wander up from the lower slopes.

By midday, you’ll arrive at Shira 2 Camp (3,850m), set against a dramatic backdrop of Kibo’s glaciers and the open sky. This is a crucial point for acclimatization, and your guides may recommend an optional acclimatization hike to a higher elevation before descending back to camp. This technique—“climb high, sleep low”—helps your body adjust to the increasing altitude and prepares you for the tougher days ahead. As the sun sets, temperatures drop significantly, and the starry night sky offers a breathtaking celestial display. The lack of light pollution makes this a perfect spot for stargazing, with clear views of the Milky Way and distant planets.

📍 Day 4: Trek to Lava Tower, Descend to Barranco Camp

Elevation: 3,850m to 4,630m (Lava Tower), then down to 3,950m
Distance: 10 km
Duration: 6–7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
🔥 Tip: Expect some mild altitude symptoms (headache, nausea). Stay hydrated!
🛏 Overnight: Barranco Camp

Today is a key acclimatization day, designed to help your body adjust to the increasing altitude through the “climb high, sleep low” strategy. The trek starts with a steady uphill climb through a landscape that shifts from the moorland zone to the alpine desert. Vegetation becomes sparse, replaced by barren volcanic rock, as the oxygen levels decrease.

After several hours, you’ll reach Lava Tower (4,630m)—a towering 300-foot (90-meter) volcanic rock formation formed by past eruptions of Kilimanjaro. Here, you’ll take a lunch break and experience the effects of high altitude firsthand. Some trekkers may feel mild symptoms of altitude sickness, such as headaches or dizziness—this is normal and part of the acclimatization process. Drinking plenty of water and maintaining a slow, steady pace is crucial.

From Lava Tower, the trail descends steeply into the Barranco Valley, a stark contrast to the rocky highlands above. The descent brings instant relief as oxygen levels increase, making breathing easier. Along the way, you’ll pass through a dense valley of giant Senecio plants (Dendrosenecio Kilimanjaro)—a unique, prehistoric-looking species that thrives in high-altitude conditions. The day’s trek ends at Barranco Camp (3,950m), a stunningly located campsite beneath the imposing Barranco Wall, a dramatic 800-foot (244-meter) rock face that you’ll climb the next day. As the sun sets, the golden hues over Kibo Peak create a magical atmosphere, making this one of the most beautiful camps on the mountain.

📍 Day 5: Climb the Barranco Wall & Trek to Karanga Camp

Elevation: 3,950m to 3,995m
Distance: 5 km
Duration: 4–5 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert

The morning begins with an exhilarating climb up the Barranco Wall, a steep rock face that requires some scrambling. Despite its intimidating appearance, it’s not technical—guides assist climbers as they navigate narrow ledges. After reaching the top, the trail winds through valleys and ridges before reaching Karanga Camp (3,995m). The afternoon is spent resting and preparing for the summit attempt.

📍 Day 6: Karanga Camp to Kibo Camp

Elevation: 4,673m (15,331 ft)
Distance: ~4 km (2.5 miles)
Duration: 4-5 hours
Habitat: Alpine desert

The final push toward the summit begins with a steep ascent to Barafu Camp (4,673m), the base camp for summit night. The trail becomes rocky and barren, with strong winds making conditions challenging. As you climb higher, the air becomes noticeably thinner, and every step requires determination and focus.

Arriving early in the afternoon, you’ll rest and prepare mentally and physically for the summit attempt. Your guides will provide a final briefing, checking your gear and ensuring you stay hydrated and warm. With temperatures dropping rapidly, layering up is essential. After an early dinner, it’s time for a few hours of sleep before the midnight ascent.

Just before midnight, your guides will wake you with hot tea and a light snack. Under the glow of headlamps, you’ll begin the slow, steady climb up the steep switchbacks leading to Stella Point (5,756m). The ascent is demanding, with freezing temperatures and the effects of high altitude making each step feel heavier. Encouraged by your guides, you’ll push forward, witnessing a breathtaking sunrise over the horizon as you near the summit.

📍 Day 7: Summit Day – Kibo Camp to Uhuru Peak, then descend to Mweka Camp

Elevation: 4,703m (15,430 ft) to 5,895m (19,341 ft), then down to 3,100m (10,170 ft)
Distance: ~17 km (10.5 miles)
Duration: 10-14 hours
Habitat: Arctic zone to rainforest

Your summit attempt begins in the early hours, under a blanket of stars, as you set off from Kibo Camp around midnight. Guided by headlamps and the encouragement of your guides, you embark on the steep, zigzagging ascent toward Stella Point (5,756m), a grueling climb that tests your stamina and resolve. The freezing temperatures, high altitude, and exhaustion make every step a challenge, but the sight of the first golden rays of sunrise illuminating the vast African plains below fills you with renewed determination.

From Stella Point, a final push of about an hour along the crater rim leads you to Uhuru Peak (5,895m)—the highest point in Africa. Standing at the summit, you are rewarded with breathtaking, surreal views of the glaciers and the vast, seemingly endless landscape below. Take in this once-in-a-lifetime moment, snap photos with the iconic summit sign, and celebrate your achievement—it’s a moment of triumph you’ll never forget.

After soaking in the accomplishment, the descent begins. You’ll retrace your steps to Stella Point before making a rapid descent along the scree-covered slopes back to Barafu Camp for a well-earned break and a hot meal. After resting for a short while, the journey continues downward through changing landscapes, from barren alpine desert to the lush rainforest zone, as you descend to Mweka Camp (3,100m). Here, you’ll enjoy a hearty dinner and a well-deserved night’s sleep, with the knowledge that the hardest part of the trek is now behind you.

📍Day 8: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate – Descending to Completion

Elevation: 3,100m (10,170 ft) to 1,640m (5,380 ft)
Distance: ~10 km (6.2 miles)
Duration: 3-4 hours
Habitat: Rainforest

The final stretch of your trek takes you through the lush rainforest, where towering trees, dense undergrowth, and the sounds of exotic birds create a serene atmosphere. As you descend, the air becomes warmer and richer in oxygen, a welcome change after days at high altitude. Keep an eye out for blue monkeys and colobus monkeys swinging through the treetops, adding to the magic of your final descent.

Upon reaching Mweka Gate (1,640m), your incredible journey comes to an official close. Here, you’ll receive your summit certificate, a proud reminder of your determination and success in reaching Africa’s highest peak. After taking final group photos and celebrating with your team, you’ll transfer back to your Moshi hotel, where a warm shower, a well-earned celebratory meal, and a comfortable bed await. As you relax and reflect on your life-changing journey, the reality of your achievement begins to sink in—an unforgettable adventure, a personal triumph, and a story to cherish for a lifetime.
